 United Way Frequently Asked Questions

Questions & Answers - United Way
  • "What is United Way?"

United Way is the largest non-profit, volunteer driven, private fundraising organization for health and human care services in our communities.

  • "What is the United Way Ambassador Program?"

The work we do at United Way for Southeastern Michigan each year is greatly supported by a team we call the Ambassadors, which plays a substantial role in helping us impact lives and communities in the region. Click here for more information about the program.

  • "Why should I give to United Way; I'm not going to use their services?"

It's possible that you might never use the United Way services, but statistics show that you or a member of your family probably have or will use United Way services at some point in your lives. United Way funded agencies provide services to all residents, strengthening quality of life. This charitable effort offers the opportunity to help with so many of our community's critical problems. United Way agencies provide crisis-based services every day.
If you need help and need to know what agency to call, in metro Detroit, dial 211. Those outside the metro Detroit area, contact your local United Way organization.

  • "Where does my contribution go?"

Money that's raised locally, stays local. Your contribution is used to fund the United Way organization for the community in which you live.

  • "Is my contribution used effectively?"

Each United Way community program identifies problems and concerns in the community and then presents its funding needs to the volunteer allocation committee. These volunteers, representing corporate, labor and community sectors, then review and make recommendations on each request based upon our community-wide assessment.

For every dollar 87 cents of every dollar goes to help find solutions to the existing and emerging community needs, and 13 cents goes towards administrative costs.

  • "How can overhead costs be so low?"

Thousands of volunteers assist the United Way in helping those in need.

  • "Why should I give through pension deduction?"

Pension deduction makes it easy for retirees to give to their community. It helps keep administrative costs low, assuring your charitable dollars are invested wisely.

  • "I'm already donating to the United Way through pension deduction. What happens if I don't make a new pledge this year?"

If you do not make a new pledge this year, your current contribution will continue to be deducted from your pension next year.

  • "Instead of having monthly contributions deducted from my pension check, can I send in a personal check?"

Yes, you may make annual contributions by sending in a check or money order, made payable to the "United Way", along with the United Way Charitable Pledge Contribution Form.

  • "Can I change my pledge any time?"

Yes, you may change your pledge at any time by completing and mailing in a new Unnited Way Charitable Pledge Contribution Form. Please allow one month for the change to become effective.
